Assessment of Fundamental Knowledge

The examination consists of three (3) papers, each with 120 multiple-choice type questions. Each paper is given in a 120 minute examination session during a single day. There will be a one (1) hour break between each examination session.

Outlined below are the content areas that may be tested. Examples of questions, content and format, are provided as a reference and study guide.

1. Basic biomedical foundation science knowledge as it relates to:

  • human anatomy and physiology
  • human histology
  • biochemistry
  • microbiology and immunology of oral diseases
  • oral physiology
  • neurological sciences
  • tooth morphology, growth and development of the craniofacial complex
  • pain and pain management
  • pharmacology
  • biological effects of radiation
  • dental biomaterials
  • nutrition

2. Applied clinical sciences knowledge as it relates to:

  • general medicine and general pathology
  • oral medicine and oral pathology
  • radiology
  • periodontics
  • preventive dentistry
  • operative dentistry
  • endodontics
  • prosthodontics
  • orthodontics
  • pediatric dentistry
  • geriatric dentistry
  • oral and maxillofacial surgery
  • oral facial and dental trauma
  • pharmacology and therapeutics
  • behavioral sciences
  • dental public health and epidemiology and population health
  • ethics
  • pain and anxiety control including local anesthetics
  • assessment of scientific literature

Assessment of Clinical Skills

During the 3 day examination, candidates will perform simulated dental procedures on simulated patients in a clinical setting. Candidates will be assessed on their performance of the identified procedures and on their record keeping, material hygiene and infection control.

The morning of Day 1 will be used for orientation and practice.

During the afternoon of Day 1 and during Days 2 and 3, candidates will be required to perform the following twelve (12) procedures:

  • Design a cast removable partial denture framework and prepare abutment teeth
  • Preparation for an amalgam restoration
  • Preparation for an anterior composite restoration
  • Preparation for a posterior composite restoration
  • Preparation for a full gold crown
  • Preparation for a ceramometal (porcelain fused to metal) crown
  • Preparation for an anterior porcelain veneer
  • Preparation for an endodontic access on a molar tooth
  • Fabricate a provisional crown restoration for a pre-prepped ceramometal (porcelain fused to metal) crown restoration. The equivalent original unprepared tooth will be available on the previous day.
  • Restore a pre-prepared for a composite restoration
  • Restore a pre-prepared for an amalgam restoration
  • Apply a rubber dam

 

Candidates will also be evaluated on the following:

  • Infection control and material hygiene
  • Record keeping
