Community programs
The Laval University’s dental school offers outreach dental care to populations outside the country and to surrounding populations that do not have easy access to dental care. We have created, with the help of the provincial ministry of health, a “center for excellence in aging and oral health”. Most of the surrounding outreach program is directed to the handicapped or cognitively impaired individuals who do not have easy access to dental care. We also offer international programs that help provide dental care to underserved area (mainly Africa, Burkina Faso and Senegal and South America Guatemala).
1. Outreach program to handicapped and cognitively impaired senior citizen on CSSS Vieille-Capitale Territory
Students implication :

2 post-graduate resident in gerodontology; 4 half-days per week
|
Nature of services rendered:
|
Fixed and mobile dental care are provided: All dental basic care (OD, Hygiene, prosthetic, periodontics) are covered
|
Target population:
|
This program covers 900 institutionalized individuals
|
2. General dentistry residency program (gerodontology)
Students implication :
|
1 resident per session; 1 day / week
|
Nature of services rendered:
|
Fixed care only (no mobile care) All basic care are covered.
|
Target population:
|
Patients from “Hopital Général de Québec Care” is free except for prosthodontics
|
3. Undergraduate clinic of gerodontology
Students implication :
|
12 students per year, each of them having a rotation of 5 half day
|
Nature of services rendered:
|
Nature of services : Fixed and mobile care, all basic care are provided |
Target population:
|
Target population : elderly ambulatory patients
|
4. Summer clinic (This clinic is financially supported through a grant from Quebec government)
Students implication :
|
About 48 students per year, all full time for 4 weeks.

Poor or handicapped persons (adapted transportation offered to those in need) |
5. International outreach programs
I. Africa (Sénégal and Burkina Faso)
Students implication :

8 third year students deliver general dentistry care for 12 weeks during the summer vacation

Nature of services rendered:
|
General dentistry (This program receives no governmental help. It is funded by private donators recruited by the students. Laval University offers a small financial help to those students ($2,000/student)) |
Target population:

Those in need of services (generally poor or sick people) |
II. Guatemala
Students implication :
|
4 third year students for 8 weeks during summer break. (This activity is sponsored by “Association des Chirurgiens Dentistes du Québec”)

Research
The Faculty of Dentistry conducts research in a variety of areas including:
- Les pathologies buccales et leurs conséquences
- La régénération tissulaire et osseuse et l’ingénierie tissulaire
- Le contrôle de la transmission des infections
- Le vieillissement et la santé buccodentaire
- Les douleurs orofaciales chroniques
