Community Programs

 1. Dental Outreach Community Services (DOCS)

Introduction:
Program initiated by part-time faculty member, Dr. Ken Wright, based on McGill’s outreach community dentistry program in 2008. Partnership is with Dr. Wright, Schulich Dentistry and the London and District Dental Society. Funding is secured through corporate, foundation, and individual funding. In 2010, DOCS was proposed to become an elective at Schulich Dentistry, so students participating could receive a credit for their work. This decision is pending.

Program Description:

 

100% volunteer-run program. Brings portable dental units into community centres, churches, and social service organizations to provide free dental care to children and adults. More complex treatment is referred to Schulich Dentistry (ie, extractions, dentures, etc.)..

Population Needs:

Vulnerable populations include: families with no income, no dental insurance, new immigrants, and the elderly. Population is screened by venues for financial need.

 2. Sports Mouth Guard Clinic

Introduction:
Initiated in 2005, by full-time faculty member (whose specialty is fixed prosthodontics), at the beginning of the traditional primary/secondary school year, one Saturday afternoon is dedicated to this program. The purpose is to educate parents on possible trauma and expulsion of teeth and mouth injuries due to contact sports. Funding is supplied by UWO Schulich Dentistry. Third and fourth year dental students fabricate the mouth guards and supervised by full-time faculty members.

Program Description:

 

The program provides free custom made mouth guards to kids aged 10 -17 who are involved in traditional (hockey, football, rugby) and peripheral contact sports (soccer, martial arts).

Children whose parents are unaware of oral sports injuries

STUDENT INITIATED PROGRAMS

1. Oral Health Total Health, London, ON Chapter

Introduction:
Initiated by U of T student Ali Sigal in 2009 and proposed to Juliana Bired and Jeremy McCallum to begin OHTH chapter in London, ON. OHTH London chapter began in 2009 and is 100% volunteer-run and fundraising is done all by students.

Program Description:

 

To provide one Sharing Smiles day and provide educational and hygiene instruction day for physical and mentally challenged adults from London, ON.

Population Needs:

Vulnerable populations include: children and adults with physical or mental challenges that prevents them or their caregivers to provide daily oral hygiene.

2. Tooth Talk

Introduction:
Initiated in 1999 to provide local school children general information on brushing and flossing their teeth, and the importance of nutrition (good vs. bad foods). Children are provided with hygiene instruction and free brush.

Program Description:

 

To provide education to school children on the importance of nutrition and general oral hygiene.

Population Needs:

School children – requests come from the primary school

Patient per event:

50 (average)
